Description

The Ski Patroller 3 (P3) is a senior Patroller who provides experience, sound judgment and leadership to the Patrol as a whole. The Ski Patroller 3 acts to facilitate flow of information between supervisory staff and line Patrollers. The Ski Patroller 3 has an eye for and understands the “big picture” and works with the team to maintain consistent standards, efficient workflow and attention to detail on a priority basis. The Ski Patroller 3 brings areas of specialization to the Patrol and mentors and trains junior Patrollers while providing feedback and insight to assist supervisory staff.

Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor - Public Safety or designate, a Ski Patroller 3 provides first aid treatment to the public and staff, patrols and maintains all slopes and ski ways of the mountain in a safe manner and participates in all training programs as and when required.. A Ski Patroller 3 maintains a cheerful and courteous relationship with the public at all times to ensure a safe and enjoyable skiing & riding environment. Being familiar with the Alpine Responsibility Code and ski resort risk management are essential parts of the ski patroller’s work. Diligence and routine in the above skills reduce the risk factor and exposure of the ski area while striving to keep incident numbers to a minimal amount.

The following Experience / Requirements and Essential Functions are the minimum responsibilities of the Ski Patroller 3, other tasks and training needs may be assigned by the Shift Supervisor - Public Safety or designate. The Ski Patroller 3 should be familiar, comfortable and efficient with all tasks listed below.

Experience/Requirements

  • Advanced Wilderness First Aid (80 hrs), or equivalent first aid training.
  • Valid CPR level C or HCP certificate.
  • Strong skiing ability in all types of snow on any terrain at Sunshine Village or similar operation; following the Ski Competency Assessment criteria.
  • CAA Avalanche Operations (Ski) Level 1 Certificate.
  • Two full seasons at Sunshine Village or five full seasons as a Ski Patroller at a similar resort (min. 5 months per season at full on-snow capability).
  • Possess all required equipment (see list below) and maintains it in good working conditions.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in a cold winter environment.
  • Comfortable working at height or in exposed areas of a mountain environment.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Be able to work individually without supervision and as part of a team, exhibiting sound decision making and interpersonal skills with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Previous leadership roles or experience.
Essential Functions

  • Obeys all Sunshine Village Corporate Policy and enforces Mountain Operations Policies that are within the limits of their authority.
  • Acts as a “Mountain Safety Ambassador”.
  • Be intimate with the ski area, its operational boundary and nearby backcountry.
  • Provides prompt, efficient, and courteous delivery of first aid.
  • Maintains signage, equipment and monitors the conditions of slopes and ski ways.
  • Participates in education of the public and staff on safe skiing and riding at Sunshine Village and other customer relations program.
  • Completes all required documentation in a timely fashion following emergency responses.
  • Be familiar with the Sunshine Village Emergency Response Plan and all Emergency Response Assistance Plans. ERAPs include but are not limited to; Medical and/or Trauma, Avalanche rescue, Lift & Gondola evacuation, High Angle rescue, Search & Rescue and Security emergencies.
  • Understands his/her role in emergency response procedures and can take undertake Scene Commander and /or Base Commander functions on all types of emergency responses by implementation of the SSV Emergency Response Action Plan
  • Demonstrates efficiency in Sunshine Village lift and gondola evacuation and self-evacuation skills and procedures.
  • Understands the avalanche control program at Sunshine Village and participates in a capacity that reflects his/her individual training. Duties include; weather and snowpack observation, explosive preparation, transport, handling, deployment, recording and storage.
  • Documents all training, explosives use, avalanche control for legal purposes and as part of the Ski Patrol training checklist and continuing education program.
  • Operates a snowmobile and other oversnow vehicles within his/her abilities and training in accordance with Sunshine Village Training Guidelines and Policies.
  • Provide front-line team leadership, mentoring and direct the operations of section teams as designated.
  • Train new Patrollers; facilitate completion of individual training checklists and continuing education
  • Direct and supervise daily operation of Patrol if Supervisor and/or Assistant Supervisor absent.
  • Lead accident investigations and ensure complete documentation and record keeping.
  • Transitions to more advanced rescue skills; Avalanche, Gondola & Lift evacuations, etc.
